IoT can be used to make transportation safe, secure and efficient. It can be used to increase compliance with traffic rules and also catch the violators.
IoT has an end number of applications. From managing appliances to manufacturing, it can make things easier. But, efficient use of IoT can also be made in easing transportation. Of particular interest are the intelligent transport management system and intelligent traffic management system developed by NEC India.

Cities like Gurugram and Manesar in NCR and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh have platforms that make use of IoT devices for regulating traffic. At the same time, IoT has been used in Ahmedabad to upgrade the Bus Rapid Transit system used by over 1.5 lakh passengers every day.
An Optical Fibre Cable is used to gather data collected from IoT sensors in CCTVs installed at major traffic junctions. This data is then analyzed at a central location to make real-time decisions. Live feeds from multiple CCTVs can be monitored from the central location, which helps in better coordination.
The use of technologies like automatic number plate recognition and red light violation detection has become possible with the help of IoT. It helps in issuing e-challans to the violators in real-time. In Gurugram, this has reduced the incidents of road fatalities and deterred violators.
Regulation of traffic has become possible with the help of IoT. The synchronization of the traffic signals can be done according to the queues at a traffic signal.

The software platform can be integrated with video analytics and a face recognition system. This enhances the capability of the system to spot anomalies so that corrective action can be taken. Face recognition system has enabled better policing as it helps in tracking blacklisted people.
Automatic Vehicle Location System is an IoT-based technology that uses GPS trackers to provide the exact location of the vehicles. This technology can be used to provide the expected time of arrival to the passengers. Public announcement systems in a transport utility can also be developed using this technology.
